Doll Commercials: Yesterday and Today....

And we wonder what why young women fall into moral degeneracy....

Mattel Chatty Cathy TV Commercial 1963 (dead)

Update: Well, that link is dead here one that works: Mattel Chatty Cathy TV Commercial 1963

Bratz Girlz Really Rock Dolls Commercial

Note: I am not endorsing the first toy just making social comment on the commercial.

  1. OK, NV. I'm going to step out on a limb here and say that both commercials, even the 1963 one that seems relatively benign, lead to the corruption and commercialization of childhood. The toy companies really don't care what kind of customer they sell to, as long as they buy. A sweet little traditional girly-girl, great! Just hand over the credit card, please. A tramp from the street corner, well, get some money from your p. daddy and hand it over.

    It's all about selling toys.

Sure, I like the wholesome image portrayed by the Chatty Cathy commercial a lot better than the Bratz one. Still, there's a fundamental problem with the whole thing.

    God bless,

  2. Yes, you are very right the whole "consumer culture" is rotten to the core. Somehow I don't think Bratz would have made in 1963, I do think Barbie, which has a very unwholesome quality to it, was made by the same toy company as Chatty Cathy at the same time; did lay the ground work for the Bratz. But the commercial does show an interesting contrast. The first doll commercial shows a doll encouraging girl to be caring and look after her younger sister. The second shows dolls that look like young skanks getting ready for a night of drinking, partying, and who knows what else...

The whole toy industry was already out of hand by the 1950's. One wonders what percentage of toys given were broken Christmas morning? Some much money wasted and so many children spoiled rotten...

  3. Ah! I just have to comment that I new a little girl who got one of those "baby bratz dolls." The dolls were wearing thong underwear... which I think is extremely inappropriate for a childrens toy.
